_FOSS tools for small organisations_

[click on image for an enlarged version] This two day workshop was presented by representative of 3 Edinburgh-based FOSS-related organisations: Peter George (Net Resources), Martin Ling (backNet), and Steve Marlow(North Edinburgh community network). They were joined by Simon Worthington and Raquel Perez de Eulate from, the OpenMute project (London) and Simon Yuill (Glasgow). The first day started off with an introduction, by Peter George and Simon Yuill, to what FOSS is: the key concepts, strengths and weaknesses, and a little bit of the history behind its development: slides from introduction Steve Marlow, from the North Edinburgh community network, then gave a presentation about his experiences of running a community-based web service and how FOSS can benefit such projects: notes from Steve Marlow talk The afternoon consisted of a series of hands-on sessions of email and office tools: Firefox, Thunderbird and the OpenOffice suite. This was led by Peter George. On the second day, Martin Ling, from backNet, did a presentation on the scalable, ad hoc networking systems they are developing, which are geared towards projects such as the creation of community-based video networks: slides from backnet presentation In the afternoon, Simon Worthington and Raquel Perez de Eulate gave a hands-on introduction to OpenMute. The OpenMute project provides both free website hosting and a suite of easy to use tools for cultural and community projects to create and manage their own websites. The tools include online galleries, discussions forums, news feeds and wikis (a form of collaborative web publishing).
